Conflict over Taiwan

Tension between mainland authorities China and Taiwan has increased in recent days due to the visit to the island of Nancy Pelosi – she flew to Taiwan on the evening of August 2 as part of a tour of Asian countries and left it on August 3. Pelosi, who assured Taiwan of Washington’s broad support during the visit, became the first speaker of the United States House of Representatives to visit Taiwan in 25 years.

The Chinese authorities, who consider Taiwan their territory, were sharply critical even before her arrival on the island. On August 4, after Pelosi’s departure, the People’s Liberation Army of China began the previously announced air and sea military exercises in the Taiwan area. The Ministry of Defense of Taiwan called Chinese maneuvers extremely provocative and announced the deployment of ground-based missile systems. Chinese state media and the Japanese Ministry of Defense reported that Chinese missiles flew over Taiwan during the exercise.
