It is highly likely that citizens of the Russian Federation will no longer be issued visas to the EU. This was stated by a political scientist, an expert on the CIS countries Andrey Suzdaltsevcommenting on the statement of the Estonian Foreign Minister to Pravda.Ru Urmas Reinsaluwho wants to add to the sanctions a ban on issuing visas to Russians in the EU.
Suzdaltsev said that the Estonian political class and ruling elite are very biased towards the Russian topic. Therefore, in his opinion, it is highly likely that the sanctions package will include a ban on the issuance of Schengen visas to Russians.
The expert said that Estonian politicians are very clearly oriented against Russia. He noted that now their main topic is the destruction of the tank, which stands in Narva and symbolizes the liberation of Estonia from the fascist invaders. According to Suzdaltsevthe Estonian leadership is busy only with this monument, and the problems of gas, inflation and prices have faded into the background.
“This topic – to stop issuing Schengen visas to Russian citizens – is also one of such bright topics that should somehow support the current coalitions that exist in the internal Estonian political arena. Estonia alone is now very clearly oriented against Russia, and this must be supported reputation, which allows us to count on some financial support from Brussels in the future,” the political scientist is sure.
However, he noted that Baltic tourism will suffer the most from this ban, because it is heavily dependent on Russian tourists. According to Suzdaltsev, the Baltic States cannot develop good neighborly relations with Russia, because “there is a request from across the ocean.”
“Then it is necessary to make sure that all these losses that the Baltic states will suffer from their actions in relation to transit and in relation to tourism are compensated by the West, the European Union,” the expert summed up.
The head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry, Urmas Reinsalu, said that the next package of sanctions against the Russian Federation should include a ban on the issuance of entry visas to the European Union for Russian citizens. This is reported Bloomberg.
“We should raise the price of Russian aggression through more sanctions, arms shipments and greater isolation of the Russian Federation,” Reinsalu said.
