Israeli planes attacked the Gaza Strip on Saturday, while the Palestinians fired missiles into Israel.
This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to Reuters.
It is noted that Israel carried out several attacks on Islamic Jihad fighters and weapons depots hidden in residential areas. As a result of the bombing of at least five houses, huge clouds of smoke and debris rose into the air.
Fifteen Palestinians were killed, including at least four militants and three civilians, including a child, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. Dozens of people were injured.
Palestinian militants fired at least 200 rockets at Israel, most of which were intercepted. Air raid sirens sounded in the cities, people fled to bomb shelters. There were no reports of serious casualties.
Further escalation will largely depend on whether the Islamic group Hamas, which controls Gaza, decides to join the fighting.
Egypt stated that engaged in intensive negotiations to calm the situation. According to sources, an Egyptian intelligence delegation headed by General Ahmed Abdelkhalik arrived in Israel on Saturday to visit Gaza for mediation talks.
Islamic Jihad said no ceasefire was in sight.
“Now is the time for resistance, not for a truce,” a spokesman for the group said.
On Friday, Israel killed a senior Islamic Jihad commander in an airstrike. The militants responded with rocket fire, but did not cause serious damage to Israel.
Earlier, Israeli forces arrested an Islamic Jihad commander in the occupied West Bank. On Saturday, the military said they had detained 19 more members of the group.
Israel reported that dozens of the group’s rocket launchers were destroyed in Gaza and that the operation disrupted preparations for an attack by the Islamic Jihad, supported by Iran.
