China began military exercises on Thursday at six locations around the island. On Saturday, the Chinese authorities announced the continuation of military exercises around Taiwan until August 15. They were originally announced before 7 August.

Entry of vessels in the southern part of the Yellow Sea during the exercise is prohibited. The main attention is paid to testing the capabilities of strike systems and attack from the sea.

The United States called these actions an escalation.

The Taiwanese army responded by deploying patrol air reconnaissance forces and surveillance ships, and put the shore-based missiles on standby.

As the agency previously reported, earlier this week, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi paid a brief visit to Taiwan, angering Beijing, which believes Taiwan its territory. Pelosi said her visit demonstrates America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s democracy, noting that “the world is facing a choice between autocracy and democracy.”

In response, China decided to conduct military exercises on an unprecedented scale around the island using ballistic missiles flying over the autonomy’s capital, Taipei.
