Ohio High School Football: Who’s On Top 5?

Football season is in full swing in Ohio, and fans are eager to see which teams make it to the top of the rankings. Every week, new teams make their way up the list while others fall further down. With the regular season coming to an end, it’s time to take a look at who is on top of the Ohio High School Football rankings. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the top teams in the state, their recent success, and what makes them stand out from the rest.

1# St. Edward (Lakewood)

St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio is a perennial powerhouse in the state of Ohio’s high school football scene. The Eagles have won eight state championships, seven of which came from 2011-2018. This year, the Eagles are ranked at the top spot of the Ohio High School Football Rankings with an undefeated record of 8-0. They have outscored opponents 248-55 and boast an impressive defense. St. Edward also has an impressive array of talent, led by Ohio State commit Jack Sawyer and 2021 four-star safety JD Bertrand. With a strong offense and defense and the best coaching staff in the state, St. Edward looks primed to make another deep run in the playoffs this year.

2# Springfield

Springfield High School is no stranger to success when it comes to Ohio High School football. The Wildcats have a long history of success, having won state championships in 1983, 1985, and 1991. This season has been no different, as the Wildcats have started off the season with a 4-0 record and have been ranked second in the Ohio High School Football Rankings.
The Wildcats have been led this season by a strong defense that has allowed just over 10 points per game. Springfield has also had a strong running game with senior running back Eric Parise leading the way, rushing for over 500 yards and 5 touchdowns through the first four games. On the offensive side, sophomore quarterback Will Thompson has been efficient, completing over 70% of his passes for 4 touchdowns and no interceptions.
Head Coach Jamie Masi has done an excellent job in his first season with the Wildcats and has them playing at a high level. If the Wildcats can continue to play like they have been all season, they could be in for a deep run in the playoffs this year.

3# Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati)

Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio has been a dominant force in Ohio High School Football for many years. In the 2018 season, they had a record of 11-2 and made it to the Division 1 State Championship game. They have an impressive record of 4 State Championships in the last 6 years and have been ranked as high as number 3 in the state. Archbishop Moeller is led by a veteran coaching staff that has been with the team for many years. The team’s starting lineup consists of talented athletes from all around the state. This year, Archbishop Moeller looks to continue their dominance in Ohio High School Football and add to their impressive legacy.

4# Central Catholic (Toledo)

Central Catholic High School in Toledo is the fourth ranked high school football team in Ohio. Led by coach Greg Dempsey, Central Catholic has been a powerhouse on the football field since 2007, having made it to the state playoffs seven times since then. On top of that, they have been district champions eight times and were the Division III State Champions in 2011. The Irish boast a loaded roster of college-bound talent that have helped lead the team to its current success. Players such as Ohio Mr. Football finalist Jahneil Douglas, a four-star recruit to Michigan State, and three-star recruit Tyler Glaubinger, heading to Air Force, are among the many talented athletes that Central Catholic has to offer. With a strong tradition of excellence and an impressive roster of players, Central Catholic is sure to make some noise in Ohio high school football this season.

5# Archbishop Hoban (Akron)

Archbishop Hoban, located in Akron, Ohio is one of the top high school football teams in the state. The Knights have been consistently ranked in the top 5 for the past three years and are once again a force to be reckoned with this season. Led by head coach Tim Tyrrell, the team has a strong offensive and defensive presence that has proven to be successful in recent years. With an experienced quarterback and a deep running back corps, Archbishop Hoban is sure to make some noise in the state playoffs. Their defense has also been solid and is filled with experienced veterans that can shut down opposing offenses.
