Border Sticks has commemorated the 530th Anniversary of the departure of the Discovery Ships from the Port of Palos to the new world. Due to such a gesture and as is tradition in our town, last Wednesday August 3rd Tribute was paid to the Illustrious palermo Martín Alonso Pinzón with a floral offering before the statue of the sailor in Plaza Commander Franco.

The act was attended by different authorities, including the Councilor for Culture of Palos de la Frontera and Second Deputy Mayor, José Luis Bonilla, accompanied by the Councilors of the Local Consistory, the President of the Real Sociedad Palósfila Pinzoniana, José Ortiz, the president of the Royal Colombina Huelva Society, José Mª Segovia and representation of the different security forces of Palos and Huelva and of the different brotherhoods and associations of Palos de la Frontera.

On this occasion, the act has acquired a special emotional character. This will be the last August 3 with José Mª Segovia as president of the Real Sociedad Colombina Huelva. For this reason, in his intervention, José Luis Bonilla wanted to praise the work of the institution and of the one that has been its president for 37 years.

For health reasons, Carmelo Romero, mayor of Palos de la Frontera, was not present at this celebration. However, he did not want to miss the opportunity to convey a few words of thanks to José Mª Segovia. “Thank you for your dedication to our people. You are and will be an example of the Pinzonian spirit”, highlighted the first mayor.

Next, the president of the Real Sociedad Palósfila Pinzoniana José Ortiz Monroy highlighted the different objectives of the Palósfila in defense of the history of discovering Palos de la Frontera.

Palos and the affection of José María Segovia

In his speech, José María Segovia, president of the Royal Columbus Society of Huelva, recognized the importance that the people of Palos de la Frontera had in the Discovery of America. By way of farewell, José María Segovia wanted to thank the affection he has received over the years from Palos de la Frontera. A love embodied in recognitions such as the Gold Medal of the town or the title of Adoptive Son.

After the delivery of crowns before the statue of the illustrious sailor from Palermo, Martín Alonso Pinzón, the presentation of the poster of the Fiestas to Our Lady of Miracles took place. The councilman of Celebrations José Luis Bonilla, the president and Big Sister of the Brotherhood, Javier Hernández and Ana Milagros Vázquez, and president of the Royal Columbus Society of Huelva, José María Segovia, were in charge.

This year, the Patron Saint Festivities of Palos de la Frontera will take place from Saturday the 13th to Tuesday the 16th of August. For this reason, the town council has prepared a program full of activities for all audiences, hoping that residents and visitors enjoy our traditions.

The event ended with a performance by Beatriz Romero from Palerma. One of the best flamenco voices in the province who, through different themes, delighted everyone present.
