The municipal library of Isla Cristina has been awarded with the Special Edition of the Maria Miller Award granted by the Ministry of Culture and Sports in collaboration with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), in order to encourage actions to encourage reading aimed at all citizens, with special attention to groups with difficulties in accessing reading, in any of the official languages ​​of the respective autonomous community and carried out by public libraries in municipalities with less than 50,000 inhabitants.

And although it is not the first time that the island library has received this award, on this occasion, the project presented in this call, “Half bread… and a book”, prepared and directed by its director, Juan Venegas, is one of the ten best in Spain (the fourth) and the first of the sixty-three Andalusians and therefore the center will receive the amount of ten thousand euros.

The project “Half bread… and a book”, inspired by Federico García Lorca’s inaugural speech at the library of his hometown when he said: “If I were hungry and helpless in the street, I wouldn’t ask for bread; but I would ask for half a loaf of bread and a book» has consisted of the launch of a series of activities and campaigns to promote reading, involving all the social and cultural agents of the municipality and with special attention to the most disadvantaged, aimed at raise awareness of the importance of reading and the love of books, and make visible the idea of ​​how, in these turbulent times, public libraries must be at the side of citizens, to give them company, comfort and, above all, culture. Activities that due to their uniqueness have made this project worthy of this important award.
