Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is visiting China for the first time since the military operation in Ukraine.

Mr Lavrov had a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was scheduled to attend a meeting with Afghanistan’s neighbors, including Pakistan, on the situation in Afghanistan.

According to Chinese state media, Mr Lavrov explained the situation in Ukraine to the Chinese Foreign Minister.

At the time, the two ministers expressed excitement over the closeness between China and Russia.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says Beijing is ready to take relations with Russia to “new eras” and “new heights.” Mr Wang said China and Russia were working together to meet the challenge of new international realities.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, on the other hand, said both countries were opposed to “the politics of hegemony and the use of force” and “hold the principles of the United Nations.

Mr Lavrov said Russia was “committed” to easing tensions in Ukraine and that Moscow would continue peace talks as well as “liaison with the international community”.

The Chinese foreign minister said China has “always been on the right side of history.” On the Ukraine crisis, he said it had a “complex history”. He says the situation in Ukraine is the result of a long-running dispute over Europe’s security.

Mr Wang said China supported efforts by others, including Russia, to “avoid major humanitarian catastrophes” in Ukraine.

Chinese Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has criticized Western sanctions on Russia.

China continues to denounce Russia for its military action in Ukraine.
